Tropical: Heart of Darkness "Little Beard" Jackfruit & Coconut Sour

Saigon is incredibly hot and humid right now, and finding the right beer to beat the heat is the only thing that matters.

While most people automatically reach for a standard lager, I believe solving this kind of weather requires a different choice. That is where Little Beard comes in, a Jackfruit and Coconut Sour by Heart of Darkness.

First Taste

The first thing you’ll notice is its very distinctive look. Little Beard pours a dense, completely opaque peach-apricot color with absolutely zero transparency, it looks exactly like a thick, freshly blended tropical fruit smoothie. A thin, soft cap of white foam sits quietly on top. Your first taste immediately reveals its texture; the oats give it a heavy, velvety mouthfeel, which is immediately cut by a sharp, clean sourness. The sweet, tropical flavor of ripe jackfruit hits you first, but the tart finish keeps it refreshing.

The Second Sip

As you spend some time with the glass and the beer warms up slightly, the profile begins to settle. The front-end sweetness of the jackfruit mellows out, letting the rich, creamy character of the coconut slowly take over. Because of the heavy oat body, you might expect the beer to become cloying or heavy after a few minutes, but the clean, acidity keeps the finish sharp. It drinks surprisingly light for a 6.4% sour, staying refreshing and clean on the palate from the first drop to the last.

Who Should Try It

This isn't your average thirst crusher, but it is an incredibly rewarding alternative to the usual lineup. You will love "Little Beard" if you are:

  • Bored of standard lagers: If you want to beat the humid heat but are tired of tasteless pale beers, the sharp sourness and heavy fruit profile offer a massive, refreshing wake-up call.
  • A fan of tropical fruit: The combination of ripe jackfruit and creamy coconut mimics local desserts, making it a dream for anyone who loves rich, fruit-forward flavors.
  • An adventurous craft drinker: The heavy use of oats combined with a tart, acidity provides a unique, velvety mouthfeel that challenges traditional beer textures.
  • A cider or white wine lover: If you usually steer clear of bitter IPAs or heavy stouts, the clean, tart fruitiness of this sour makes it highly approachable.

Appearance

A dense, completely opaque peach-apricot color with absolutely zero transparency and a thin cap of white foam, looking exactly like a thick, freshly blended tropical fruit smoothie.

Aroma

Light tropical scent, combining the distinct, sweet smell of ripe jackfruit with a subtle, creamy hint of shredded coconut.

Taste & Mouthfeel

A velvety, heavy mouthfeel from the oats gives way to a clean, sharp sourness that perfectly balances sweet ripe jackfruit and rich coconut before finishing crisp and refreshing.

Overall Impression

An incredibly rewarding tropical escape that drinks surprisingly light for 6.4%, beautifully balancing rich coconut and sweet jackfruit with a sharp, palate-cleansing sour finish.

Pairing & Setting

Pair it with spicy, salty street food like grilled squid with chili or rich, fatty dishes like crispy roasted pork belly, as the beer's sharp acidity perfectly cuts through the fat and balances the heat.
